The Colour Play is a movement drama lasting approximately 45 minutes.
It was originally designed to be performed for non-English speaking
children in the isolated aboriginal communities of Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory of Australia and first performed by the NT
Theatre-in-Education Team in May 1983.
From the earth we are born. As we grow we change and
separate, as we mature we crave what we don’t have, create walls and
make war, as we age we understand and try to solve the mysteries of
our complex conflicts, as we die we unite into the dust of time.

The Lieder Theatre Company is the longest running theatre company in Australia. Established in 1891 it has now grown to provide the
focus for the performing arts in the Goulburn Region.
The Lieder Theatre Company is a community theatre servicing a regional population
of approximately 25,000 inhabitants including the main town of Goulburn, Australia’s first inland city. Goulburn is situated approx 200km
south of Sydney and 100km north of Australia’s capital city, Canberra.
The
site where the city of Goulburn now sits was a meeting place for various aboriginal
tribes. Recent archaeological evidence suggests that people lived in
this area of South Eastern Australia for at least 21,000 years. Groups
numbering up to thousands gathered in the Goulburn area for ceremonies.
Some of the language groups/tribes living in and around the district
included the NGUNAWAL, WIRADJURI, WADI-WADI, and GUNDUNGARRA. Regretfully,
the local aboriginal population was decimated by disease and local wars
soon after the arrival of Europeans to Goulburn, and now much of their
language and culture has disappeared.
The Lieder Theatre Company provides and develops
a broad range of quality theatre which is entertaining, educational
and innovative in its role, and welcomes, acknowledges and responds
to the needs and interests of the community, building integrity, pride
and respect for the arts.
The Lieder Theatre Company presents up to six mainstage productions
throughout each year offering classics, Australian, contemporary, commissioned,
youth, educational, experimental and community theatre that is relevant
and innovative in its approach and style. The work is presented in the
historic venue of the Lieder Theatre (which turns 80 years old on 22
August this year) and occasionally taken into the community and region.
The Lieder Youth
Theatre Company provides regional
and isolated youth in the Goulburn area with recreational and training
opportunities in the performing arts. It
evolved out of the Lieder Theatre Company in 1993 and actively participates
in the main Company’s community productions. The Youth Theatre is now
a locally recognized bridge for young people serious about a professional
arts future. The Company presents at least one major performance project
each year as well as performing at many of the major outdoor community
events in Goulburn as stilt walkers, fire manipulators, acrobats, clowns,
face painters and dancers.
