The cast of Secret Bridesmaid's Business in rehearsal at the theatre

Secret Bridesmaids’ Business is set in a hotel suite on the night before Meg’s wedding, where she has gathered together her mum and bridesmaids for one last night of good old-fashioned girlie fun…. Well, that’s the plan, anyway, but plans have a way of going awry…

The Lieder cast features a great line up of popular local performers - Anne Gaul, Heather Edwards, Erin Williams, Anthea Foley, Amanda Aitken and Gosh Waters. This is a comedy not to be missed and a great way to celebrate the beginning of 120 years of top entertainment at the Lieder.

SPECIAL DEAL - current Lieder members and U3A members can purchase $10 tickets for the first Friday and Saturday performances of Secret Bridesmaids’ Business!

The Year Ahead...

2011 marks 120 years of the Goulburn Liedertafel and the year is shaping up to be a big one for the company.

The year got off to a flying start with members of the Lieder Youth Theatre Company organising a working bee at the theatre on Wednesday 5th - they cleaned up parts of the Lieder scene dock especially the Youth Theatre corner and packed away decorations from our Christmas party. Thank you to all who helped out!

On 9th January Chrisjohn represented Australia at the IATA Asian Region meeting of Community Theatre coordinators in Singapore, presenting a paper on the state of community theatre in Australia today and speaking about Australia’s hosting of the 12th World Children’s Theatre Festival to be held on Cockatoo Island in 2012.

Local volunteers and young people are already lining up to be part of this once in a lifetime event - performing and assisting behind the scenes, acting as ambassadors for Australia and the Lieder Theatre, and ensuring smooth running and exciting entertainment for the hundreds of young people attending from around the world.

We are already well into rehearsals for Secret Bridesmaids’ Business and have begun work on the next three productions Talking Heads, Captain Rossi and the Bishop of Goulburn, and Stepping Out.

Circus workshops for young people have been a raging success during January with participants showing off their talents on Australia Day in Victoria Park.

Also, a small but very appreciative group of adults attended January's playreading of Louis Nowra's The Golden Age, followed with a workshop on "How to study a script when preparing for a role on stage" with guest tutor Annabel Scholes. We welcome Annabel back to the Lieder Theatre and look forward to more creative partnerships.

The year's program of shows has been pencilled into place, leaving room for a guest company from Holland, plenty of youth theatre activities, and even a few surprise foyer productions.

Even though this is an office bearing role the position of Vice President may be filled by an existing committee member or a returning member to the Board of Management, thereby freeing up a position for an ordinary committee member.

No experience is necessary just a keen interest to participate and have your say in the day to day running of the Lieder Theatre Company and the Lieder Youth Company.
We would love to hear from you, young or old!

Please feel free to discuss or register your interest by contacting Pauline J. Mullen @ the Lieder Theatre 4821 5066 or emailing the Lieder on lieder@goulburn.net.au

Let's get the ball rolling by finding out some more about active Lieder Theatre member and new newsletter editor, Erin Williams...

Erin Williams??????

Age, hometown, occupation?
Age - nearly 32 (blurgh!)
Hometown - I was born and bred in Goulburn. I lived in
Canberra for 11 years, but have recently moved back to
Goulburn to be closer to the Lieder, friends and family.
I'm still working in Canberra, as a manager and reference
librarian at the National Library of Australia.

How long have you been involved at the Lieder Theatre?
Some days it feels like forever! I first joined the theatre in
1993, and haven't really stopped since.
That's nearly 20 years!

On tour in the United States

How did you become involved at the Lieder Theatre?
I first participated in some holiday youth theatre workshops in the summer of 1993. Later that year I was stage crew for Steel Magnolias.
I was first on stage in 1994's foyer production of The Lesson and then on the main stage in Dinkum Assorted in the same year.

What's your favourite Lieder production?
There are so many it's hard to remember them all! Lots of shows have been special to me for different reasons, I guess. Some of my favourites have been Dinkum Assorted (gold lame dresses and a real goat), Blackrock (amazing story, and an amazing group of youth theatre people), Under Milk Wood (amazing ensemble experience), The Ballad of Mary Ann Brownlow (amazing local true story).

I've also been lucky enough to tour overseas with the Lieder on several different occasions, and I feel incredibly fortunate to have those experiences. 1998 - Czech Republic and England, 2009 -Monaco and Spain, 2010 - United States.

At the moment my favourite production is SECRET BRIDESMAIDS' BUSINESS!!

Favourite memorable Lieder moment?
The first one that springs to mind is when I was stage managing Hotel Sorrento and I forgot to set the forks! The poor actors had to eat a hot meal with their fingers and some very stale bread - sorry guys!

In terms of amazing theatre moments though - I think I would have to say that Ladies Night is certainly up there, along with watching Matt Kay playing the role of Fish in Cloudstreet and watching Pauline Mullen playing the role of Lady Macbeth.

What does the Lieder mean to you?
The Lieder is my haven and the people in it are my family. When I'm not there I'm wondering when I can go back.

What plays would you most like to see on the Lieder stage?
The Crucible -I've been asking for this for YEARS!
Fire in the Basement
More absurdism, more shows in the foyer

Do you have a dream part you'd like to play?
Not really, I think I've been lucky to play lots of different roles over the years.

What do you do when you're not at the Lieder?
Sleep!
