From the President...

This month with the help of Jennifer and Chrisjohn, I have submitted an application for a Volunteer Grant through the Department of Families, Housing, Community services and Indigenous Affairs. If successful we will be able to assist our volunteers with a contribution towards fuel costs for a period of a year and purchase much needed storage containers for our wardrobe. We have applied in the past without success and would hope for a favourable outcome on this occasion.

Submitting this application highlighted for me the invaluable contribution volunteers make to the Lieder Theatre and the Company. I am sure Chrisjohn would agree that without us we would not have him either!

Statistics presented at our 2010 Annual General Meeting reported 361 volunteers were involved in our 2009 – 2010 productions. I consider this a considerable achievement given the size of our membership base, and am extremely proud of the quality of work achieved by us as a company.

Our volunteers come from a variety of backgrounds, professional and non-professional, range in age from 5 years to 87 years and contribute in a variety of ways on and off stage. Whilst our numbers wax and wane from year to year there are many whose contributions span many years and in some cases decades!

I guess for me one of the least highlighted facts about our theatre is that as financial members of The Goulburn Liedertafel Incorporation we are custodians of this building. We own it, run it and are responsible for its future. The Lieder Theatre Company is born of it and under the guidance of wonderful artistic directors over the years, they and our volunteers contribute to the cultural wellbeing of our community. A community without the arts is indeed a community without a soul and we have much to be proud of.

Thank you to our wonderful volunteers!

The Lieder Youth Theatre Company Presents

Vernon God Little

From the Man Booker prize-winning novel of the same name

A wild and dangerously uncensored romp through the minds of today’s teenagers

THIS PLAY CONTAINS ADULT THEMES AND IS NOT SUITABLE FOR CHILDREN

Friday 1st, Saturday 2nd, Wednesday 6th, Friday 8th & Saturday 9th July @ 8pm

The Lieder Youth Theatre Company is in rehearsal for a contemporary and controversial play called Vernon God Little. This play was written in 2007 for the Young Vic Theatre Company in London from the Man Booker prize-winning novel of the same name and is a fast-paced black comedy set in Texas and inspired by the 1999 Columbine High School massacre.

Vernon God Little is not for the faint-hearted and involves strong language and adult themes. The story is a contemporary piece dealing with playground bullying and peer pressure. The hero is an innocent fifteen year old boy called Vernon Little who lives with his mother in Martirio, a flea-bitten Texan town. His best friend just massacred sixteen of their classmates before killing himself. The town wants vengeance and turns its sights on Vernon.

The cast features Mark Churchill, Kieran Milward, Courtney McKenzie, Bridget Devery, Samantha Parker, Jesse Parsons, Josh Waters, Kyle McKenna, Kirsten Smith, Katurah Clarke, Liam Stanton, Linden Fennamore and Sebastien Thornton Walker.

Vernon God Little has received financial support from Regional Arts NSW through their Country Arts Support Program (CASP). This program is funded by the NSW Government through Arts NSW and jointly delivered by Regional Arts NSW and Southern Tablelands Arts Inc. to the Lieder Theatre.

This production is being ably assisted by Ceilidh Newbury as stage manager and by Bill Dorman, Peter McLaren, Pauline J Mullen, Anne Gaul, Erin Williams, Brian Richardson, Jodie Simpson, Colin Simson, Lee Gray, Ben Martin and Chrisjohn Hancock.

Vernon God Little will be performed in the Lieder foyer theatrette on Friday 1st, Saturday 2nd, Wednesday 6th Friday 8th and Saturday 9th July commencing at 8pm each night.

Seating is limited and due to the highly controversial nature of the play no children will be allowed into the performance.

Booking in advance is highly recommended and can be made by phoning the Lieder on (02) 4821 5066. Purchase tickets person at Michael Connolly Chemist, 312 Auburn Street Goulburn or online at www.liedertheatre.com
